Software Reviews - AVG 2011

Wednesday, December 22, 2010 ·

Well sorry for a long gap between my posts. Hectic week...

So i was quite curious with the latest AVG 2011 anti-virus and fooled around a bit with it. Its never too late to review about a software as there is aways something different.
Keeping this in mind i thought i will go ahead and review this one.

Well all you peers out there..
Number 1.
They now started commercializing it a lot. You get an additional AVG PC analyzer which actually tells you the registry errors and stuff like that. And in your first scan you get about 600 errors.
This i felt was a bit of an exaggeration. I did a small double check in the Ccleaner and Glary utilities and found only about 6 or so.

Why then all this numbers?
Ans: Once you click fix, you will be taken to another browser window where you will be prompted to purchase the tune up utilities. An unnecessary purchase. When the best registry fixing software doesn't find any prob.

Another common problem i encountered was the speed of scan. While i did a large scale scan of about 160 GB of files..i found it terribly slow even on high priority scan and with the scanner executor given real time processor usage permission.
This was something i never expected from AVG. The earlier version of AVG [AVG 9.0] did the scan in 55 mins and 49 secs. While the AVG 2011 did the same scan in 1 hr 04 mins 17 secs.
Its always supposed to be better. And this was in a quad core processor..imagine core 2 duo.

While i haven't ran out of bad news i also wanted to comment on the extreme plush presentation of the new AVG. The freeware also does all the job of removing harmful virus and the link scanner is a boon to online newbies.

And the new buttons are rather a luxury when compared to the other Antivirus softwares such as Kaspersky and Avira, Avast.... Its quite simple to use and u never have to use too many tabs. A huge plus

One of the key feature i loved the most was the automatic USB device scanner. In which even if u forgot to scan the pen drive before you open it, AVG scans it automatically and removes all the threats.

And as usual, till now AVG is one of the few anti-virus software that uses lower RAM than any most windows programs. Which i have personally tested against Kaspersky.

Its a great deal as its around INR 799/-. and INR 1199/- for 2 computers.
I would definitely suggest you to go for AVG. Its way better than Avast or any other. This you may observe as AVG is still the top download in cnet downloads.
