Overclocking an android phone

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 · 0 comments

Ever wished you could boost the performance of your LG Optimus One or your Experia?
Dont search anywhere else... i got just the thing for you....

This little article is about "Overclocking your Andriod phone". The software tools you need are available in my DOWNLOADS tab.

There are some steps you need to follow before you can actually start overclocking. So here are those steps:

1.  Rooting.

Rooting your andriod phone is very important for overclocking. The software Androot is available in my DOWNLOADS tab. You must set the phone to permanently rooted, so that setting dont change when you reset your phone.

2. Overclocking

The app for overclicking SetCPU is used to do this. Its again available right here in DOWNLOADS. Its the same process as your desktop overclocking. Download the SetCPU and install it. Start the app. You will be asked to allow superuser access. Allow it
The app will identify your processor speed. You can do this manually as well.

If you are not allowed to overclock. To add clock speed create a text file in your SD card. Name in setcpu.txt
Type in manual speed that you like to overclock to. eg. 250000, 500000, 600000, 800000 etc etc...

The next time you start SetCPU, you can choose the preset value by accessing the txt file.

3. Testing your overclock

Linpack app is used to benchmark the performance. Sadly it cannot be downloaded directly. Search in the Andriod market to get it.  After every overclock check out the improved perfomance. Watch the effect on your battery life as well. Try to find the right balance between battery life and performance.

Mobile Review :Nokia C7-00

Saturday, January 1, 2011 · 0 comments

Nokia C7-00 ! The first ever Nokia phone that i've ever felt interested in after me switching to the Samsung. Yeah guys it actually got me interested. You might be wondering why this is better than the Nokia N8-00,well its quite the feel of the phone as a whole. Now lets get serious about the review.

Specs:
Screen size: 3.5"
Resolution: 16:9 nHD (640 x 360 pixels) AMOLED[clearly not SUPER AMOLED :P],16.7 million colours
Capacitive touch screen,Orientation sensor (Accelerometer),Compass (Magnetometer),Proximity sensor
Ambient light detector.
Power Management:
BL-5K 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery
Talk time (maximum):
GSM up to 576 mins(2G)
WCDMA up to 318 mins(3G-Looks like 3G is quite a SUCKER)
Standby time (maximum):
GSM up to 555 h
WCDMA up to 656 h
Video playback time (H.264 720p, 30 fps, maximum): up to 6.5 h
Video recording time (H.264 720p, 25 fps, maximum): up to 3.8 h
Video call time (maximum): up to 160 mins
Music playback time (offline mode, maximum): up to 54 h
So this is a very decent battery life, especially for all those people who look out for battery life and nothing else, this is quite the pick!

SOFTWARE:
Symbian^3 OS for Nokia
Java MIDP 2.1
Qt 4.6.2, Web Runtime 7.2
HTML 4.1
Software updates Over the Air (FOTA) and Over the internet (FOTI)
Flash Lite 4.0
OMA DM 1.2, OMA Client provisioning 1.1

Software is quite the catch in all the Nokia Mobile nowdays! So if your thinking twice about a nokia phone i am sure its for the Software related probs. The constant freezing and rebooting crap is all in the past!

Has nokia done anything about it?

Read on.
I should also tell you guys about the graphics, the C7-00 has Dedicated graphics processor with OpenGL 2.0 which enables 3D graphics.Sounds awesome doesn't it?
These are the technical details i can pitch in about this phone.

Now the actual comparisons and trashing:
Nokia C7-00 when compared to the Nokia N8-00 looks quite cheap,It actually is cheaper.Although it looks cheap C7-00 carries a pretty good look. The metallic back panel looks great.Other than that this is made of plastic making it light weighing just 130g.The phone fits nicely into your palm which gives us better comfort and feel over the Nokia N8-00.The dual keys on the sides which performs both volume control and zoom operations finds itself a good place on the phone. The power button, the 3.5mm Audio jack , the charger pin and the Camera hard key completes this phone.

A sad part about this phone is that it does not have a Hot swappable micro SD slot[there's gonna be a lot of rebooting].And to exacerbate the situation they've given us a hot swappable SIM slot(come on who swaps their SIM often over a Memory card?).Talking about the screen, its a 3.5mm AMOLED screen which looks long and not broad. This does not have the iphone or the Galaxy feel it adds its own NOKIA feel to the comfort, which is not that bad either.

Talking about the Camera,Its just a work of art again. The 8MP camera does not have much of the Cons.It has great clarity during the day and a fair Night pictures.Only fair because of the not-so-charming LED flash.
The video shooting is amazing with 720p HD quality with a 25 fps.So its just like all the smart phones out there.HD recording with 25fps or more. The camera has been given justice.

Now the Symbian^3,is it all good? i've already told you guys about the Phone software in the Nokia N8-00 review. To those reading this for the first time i've just one word-BAD!

Yeah the officials in NOKIA have in some ways decided to have Symbian^3 look almost similar like S60's.They probably did not want a great learning curve and scare away the current customers and so brought forth the Symbian^3 which is in some way almost like S60.You guys would think i am crazy but at the time of the phone test it did hang a couple of times.Which none would prefer. Therefore again booing the failed Software. It doesn't feel modern enough.

Further more details-Contacts.. This is almost the same with the OVI contacts too which can have a sync with the Facebook and Twitter accounts.I've got reviews that the sync isn't all that good.
Messaging-I did tell you guys that the phone is quite long so in Nokia's defense the 3*4 Alphanumeric keypad is all you'll get because a QWERTY in the portrait mode is pretty dumb looking into the phone's dimensions. The landscape mode has the QWERTY with 2 different input mehods-Tap and Swype.Yup finally the Android-made-popular swype is in Nokia too and C7-00 is the first to have it not even N8-00.
Internet-The browsing is not all that comfortable, although it supports flash 10.1 it still feels stiff! Adding insult to injury is the Freezing when playing videos and trying to pinch zoom it sometimes. Its quite irritating when Your phone freezes that often.

Media-The phone has great music clarity when played in Loudspeaker mode and even better when plugged in with an earphone. You can change the balance so that your loudspeakers are channeled to the side u prefer. The phone refreshes the music library automatically when Micro SD card is added making your work easier.

THE JUDGEMENT:

LIKES:
The camera.
The light weight, Screen and Comfort.
FM transmitter.
Excellent battery life.

DISLIKES:
Crashes.
Poor Contacts sync.
Symbian^3.

The Nokia C7-00 is a cheap phone which gives you great satisfaction. It competes with some of the top phones in the biz.
As the bearer of the early Symbian^3 OS the handset might have the hype needed to sell enough, but all the enthusiasts out there would be disappointed with the phone. If your an average user who is okay with phone freeze and not that demanding this is your pick.
