A Comparison Between Alienware and Assembled Computer

Friday, December 10, 2010 ·

We all have heard of the legendary gaming computer Alienware. And today i thought i will compare the Alienware to an assembled gaming rig.
The new Alienware launched called the Alienware Aurora ALX.
With a price of INR 3.00 Lakhs  i don't think that we can see this PC in every home. But then with a little planning and careful selection we can get even more powerful rig for an even lesser price. Which is exactly what i am going to emphasize in this post.

Now let me get to the basics:
INSIDE DELL AURORA
Dell Alienware Aurora ALX:
Processor: Core i7 980 Extreme 12MB L3 Cache [6 cores]
Chipset: X58 chipset with LGA 1366 socket
Ram : 24 GB DDR3
HDD: 2 x 320 GB [Velociraptor]
Graphic Cards: 2 x ATI Raedon HD 5870
Blue Ray combo, Windows 7 Ultimate etc etc

Pros:
We can easily see that this right here is THE PC!. With a Core i7 980 extreme processor with 6 cores [we miss the fact that it actually has additional 6 cores cause of the hyper-threading and it also has turbo boost technology-automatic overclocking!] and a whopping 24 GB RAM nothing can come close to Dell Alienware. On field testing this beast we got the juice out with playing 2 games at a time on maxed setting [COD BO and Prototype (my favorites)]. Which is pretty damn impressive for any computer. When we over-clocked we found out we could get over 4.2 GHz Base clock frequency that would beat the crap out of any other computer.

Cons:
We found out that with all this juice a surprise of such a small HDD. With just 640 GB this is not as great a PC as it sounds. If memory wasn't my area and it was all gaming i would have gone for a console directly. And with Dell's strict policy of warranty issues you cannot add your own extra Hard disk and buying one from Dell isn't such a great idea. We found out that the blueray player was a great addition but this was like a machine made for the future. We don't need the blueray combo and stuff now. Spending valuable money which could have been channeled to a better HDD would have been great. This was quite similar to when DVD players came out. At first they were costly and came with bundled computers but now they are cheaper than a wireless mouse. We also found out that there wasn't much difference from the earlier Dell Aurora desktop which was priced at INR 2.00 Lakhs. So where did the extra lakh come in? We got no clue!

Would you be spending INR 3.00 Lakhs for a computer like this when you can build something better.

GOTTA CONNECT THE GOLD FINGERS FOR CROSSFIRE

Assembled Computer:
Processor: Core i7 980 Extreme 12MB L3 Cache [6 cores]             -INR 55,500
Motherboard:  MSI Big Bang XPower                                                    -INR 20,500
Asus Tuf Sabertooth X58                                                  -INR 17,800
RAM: 24 GB DDR3                                                                                    -INR 24,000
HDD: Seagates Barracuda 7200 2TB HDD                                 -INR 5000
Graphic Card: Asus EAS5870[1 GB GDDR5] x 2                           -INR 40000
                      MSI Gforce GTX 460 [1 GB GDDR5] x 2                -INR 30000
Corsair Liquid Cooling Kit:                                                           -INR 3500
Cooler Master APU                                                                    -INR 3500
iBall Bullet Cabinet                                                                     -INR 4000
Windows 7 Ultimate                                                                     -INR 8500
ASUS FULLY LOADED MOTHERBOARD

CORSAIR HYDRA LIQUID COOLING
And the total comes to 1.54 Lakhs
This may not seems so good but the configuration is such that with the MSI motherboard supports any card so you can have 2 cards of any type. This is actually a budget flexibility.
Since you are buying it part by part each one is covered to upto 3 years of warranty except HDD which is covered upto 5 years. However Dell aurora's Warranty period is only up to 1 year. Very huge number to ponder upon. You don't want to waste 3 lakhs for nothing. And any addition from Dell Costs!.

Both the motherboard allows on board over-clocking and is equally feature rich as the Dell aurora's Motherboard.

iBALL BULLET CABINET
Finally it all boils down to one question. Are you comfortable with assembly or bundled PC.
I would very strongly suggest against Dell as what we actually need is performance and not some strip of LED glowing.

And further more in case of an AMD phenom X6 processor the cost comes down even further. As phenom X6 is 12k while i7 extreme is 55k!

Is it 3.00 Lakhs or 1.54 lakhs? Its all your choice
